The flag was captured on May 18, 1945, the same date written in the Silver Star citation for 1st Lieutenant Francis Xavier Smith, Platoon Commander, Company D, 2nd Battalion 29th Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division. Lt Smith enlisted on September 11, 1942 and went to Officer Candidate School the following year to train
