This is a scarce variant of cartridge box known as the No. 2 Hagner. In 1873 the cavalry board agreed the use of the Hagner 45 cal Cartridge Box intended for the 45 70 cal. The Hagner was smaller than the Hagner No1 as it differed in cartridge layout and was thought to of only be issued as a cavalry model although this was not proven. The Hagners were issued as a pair holding 24 rounds in each, these were to stay in
