There is no major damage that we can see

These items are now on display at the United States Naval Academy Museum at Annapolis

but no real wear through to the base metal

This mortar round is totally non functional and inert, having been deactivated according to specifications outlined by the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). It is totally inert, cannot be converted to an explosive device. Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition
