Made in Philadelphia by RICHARDSON & OVERLAND starting in a U. S. Government order dated August 31st 1861 a total of some 17,000 units were produced by this maker. The serial number of our example is 22737. Ironically the Original patent # 29,157 granted on July 17th. 1860 was to MAHLON J. GALLAGER, who was born in South Carolina and throughout the Civil War lived in Savanna , Georgia. It was first produced in Percussion, but
